Julia León is not only a singer but also a thirsty investigator. Through her trajectory, Julia León has been gathering an extensive directory of traditional folklore from many different Mediterranean countries;
ancient songs she hoarded from the wrinkled lips of the oldest people in rural areas, people that still remember those tunes that no other is still able to retell, harmonies with which she inspired her new creations. She has composed nearly fifty songs and compiled more than two hundred folk songs, many of them previously unknown for the public.
Her contact with Sephardic folk music has been extensive, during the last twelve years, she compiled from Hebrew communities in Madrid and Valencia, among others important towns in Spain, but also, from Isaac Levi’s family, the most highlighted collector of Sephardic folk music in Israel and from the Universities of Ramat – Gan and Jerusalem as well. Turkish and Morocco Jew communities also were important sources. This encounter with the Sephardic folk, has given her a richness that determined the sound and “shape” (form and structure) of her new compositions and arrangements, changes that influenced the way she would perceive the music for ever.
During the sixties she was also cofounder of the musical movement “Canciones del Pueblo” (The Village’s songs), in which she dives into the challenge of adapting the lyrics of well known poets like Lorca, into music. She also uses the lyrics of other poets like Miguel Hernandez, Neruda, Nicolás Guillen, León Felipe, Machado and her own creation. Later on, she also mixed Sephardic harmonies to She has musicalized the poems of some of the best known poets from the Spanish Gold Century (XV, XVI and XVII) as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Garcilaso Gutierre de Cetina, Góngora, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Quevedo, Calderón, Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Juan de la Cruz, etc… for two of her latest records.
She has worked for Spanish, national and autonomic TV, in many occasions but also for EEUU, Cuba, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Israel, Palestine, Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, Check Republic, France, Egypt, Italy and Great Britain televisions. Julia León has the experience of countless concerts through all those named countries.
To the day, she is working in her next project, a new Sephardic record with oriental flavor (from East Israel).
